Jamila Dawson, LMFT is an interdisciplinary sex therapist serving folks of all genders and orientations who are looking to shed shame and disconnection and create new sexual and relationship possibilities.
It’s with this framework in mind that she’s able to situate people’s suffering and challenges not as failures of their bodies or minds, but as responses to a culture that has damaging and unhealthy views on sex, relationships, bodies, race, and gender. Because of this, her work is strongly rooted in social justice, activism and helping her clients navigate not just their own relationships, but the cultures in which they live.
Jamila’s success with her clients is shaped by her pleasure-based, trauma informed framework and her concept of the 5 C’s (Curiosity, Creativity, Collaboration, Courage, Compassion) . Her ability to deeply help her clients stems from her combined experience as both a licensed therapist and a sex educator.
Inspired by by her work in sex education, she pursued her Master’s in Clinical Psychology so she could go further in helping people develop healthy relationships with their sexuality. As a sex-positive therapist, Jamila has strong connections to the kink, polyamory, and sex-education scenes in Los Angeles and is part of the communities she cares for. Her ability to navigate these roles stems from her commitment to discretion, confidentiality, and ethical provision of services. Being within these communities allows her to provide truly customized support for her clients and gives her valuable insight into the broader socio-historical systems that shape a person’s present experience of sexuality and relationships.
When she’s not working, you can find her out in the community, spending time with her cats, watching Golden Age Hollywood movies, action films, or reading old mysteries and new sci-fi.
